Samarawickrama’s 93 helps Sri Lanka to competitive total Samarawickrama missed a ton by 7 runs (pic Cricbuzz) Source : island A crucial contribution from Sadeera Samarawickrama helped Sri Lanka finish with 257/9 in the Super Fours game against Bangladesh in Colombo on Saturday (September 9). Sri Lanka had slipped to 164/5 at one stage but Samarawickrama’s 72-ball 93 helped them post in excess of 250, which appears a competitive total on a pitch that hasn’t been easy to bat on. Sri Lanka got off to a steady start after being asked to bat, with both Dimuth Karunaratne and Pathum Nissanka playing their drives confidently for regular boundaries. But their partnership ended on 34 as Hasan Mahmud, having been driven a couple of times by Karunaratne, pulled back the length a bit and had the batter nicking to the ‘keeper. Kusal Mendis and Nissanka continued in a positive manner, taking on the pacers, which ...

Mendis, Karunaratne give Sri Lanka a strong start Source : island England may have left New Zealand shores a few weeks ago, but the spirit of Bazball resided in Kusal Mendis’s batting. The No.3 batter counter-attacked against the home team’s pace bowlers for almost two hours in testing batting condition to dominate in an otherwise even opening day of play at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, on Thursday. The visitors, led by Mendis’s 87, went to stumps on 305 for 6. Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 305/6 (Kusal Mendis 87, Dimuth Karunaratne 50; Tim Southee 3-44, Matt Henry 2-65) vs New Zealand ...

Pumped up Sri Lanka chase consistency against Pakistan – by Trevine Rodrigo – Melbourne (eLanka Sport editor) Dimuth Karunaratne leads a pumped up Sri Lanka against Pakistan, confident that they can continue the upward trend after a series levelling effort against Australia.  There’s a new energy emanating among the Sri Lankans, overriding the political and economic crisis enveloping the country and it augurs well to create a necessary distraction among the suffering masses. Cricket among the population always takes away the troubles of the world, albeit during its limited duration, and Sri Lanka’s cricketing heroes have provided that.  The Australian tour in many ways provided a welcome avenue to quell the doom and gloom the country is going through apart from injecting much needed revenue towards an almost bare financial situation.  Australia and their fantastic band of ambassadors will be long remembered for their bravery in  embarking on a tour shrouded ...

Dinesh Chandimal and debutante Prabath Jayasuriya stun Australia – By Trevine Rodrigo in Melbourne (eLanka Sports editor)   If there is a turning point to a country ravaged by tragedy, Sri Lanka has emerged from it on all fronts with an inexplicable innings win over Australia against the tide of expectation. Absolutely annihilated in the first Test and embarrassed to a point where redemption appeared beyond the reach of reality, the Lankans proved that ‘ impossible’ was not a word that belonged to their belief or psyche. Two players made this dream a reality, much against all expectations, and the efforts of Dinesh Chandimal and debutante Prabath Jayasuriya will go down in the annals of history as two of the country’s most cherished heroes.  After the first Test debacle in Galle where Sri Lanka hastily discovered that preparing spinning tracks would give them a supreme advantage against all opposition only to ...

Hara Kiri by Sri Lankan Cricketers assures Hallelujah for the Aussies at Galle – By Michael Roberts Source:thuppahis.com On a wicket with uneven bounce that also supported massive spin the Sri Lankan batsmen proceeded to perform “hara kiri” in a manner that was as comical as disastrous. The second innings scoreline of 113 runs underlines the disaster; but does not quite capture the astounding manner in  which some of the batsmen  contibuted to their dismissal — though one must also record the competent fielding (catched by Labushagne and Swepson) and intelligent bowling). What’s Happening to Cricket?- By Dr. Tilak S. Fernando   Everyone in Sri Lanka, from children to grown-ups, know about cricket. Though volleyball is known as Sri Lanka’s national game, cricket took its place due to its popularity. There was a time when even Kussi Ammas were engrossed in the game whenever cricket matches appeared on TV screens.  When players such as Duleep Mendis, Kumar Sangakkara, Roshan Mahanama, Bandula Warnapura, Sanath Jayasuriya, Brenden Kuruppu or Arjuna Ranatunge batted, crowds were enthusiastic. The game’s enthusiasm peaked when Arjuna Ranatunge won the world cup in 1996. The game needs to be played according to the game’s rules and within the spirit of the game. ...

Why Sri Lanka will be no push-overs for India – by Trevine Roar Pro Source:theroar.com.au Doomsayers in Sri Lanka are bracing themselves for a whitewash by the Indians in the two-Test series, but I have a gut feeling that the tourists will be no pushovers. Dimuth Karunaratne leads a Sri Lankan outfit unusually sitting at the top of World Test Championship rankings currently in its infancy. The Lankans are a team looking for resurgence and they are stacked with a blend of youth and experience. But expert predictions strongly suggest they will be blown away by the powerful Indians led for the first time by Rohit Sharma. The emotional attachment by Indian fans celebrating former skipper and cult hero Virat Kohi’s 100th Test may lift the home team and fend off any possible challenge. India will be in the process of evolution under Sharma, axing several seasoned campaigners for new ...
