The art of building new content: Generative AI By Aditya Abeysinghe At present, regenerating images and audio from existing images and audio is a common activity. Most images are edited to attract viewers and audio files are edited to enhance listening quality. However, creating new content from existing files, especially generating images and other media files has been a trend that sprung recently. This process of using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate new content is known as generative AI. What is the use of generative AI? One of the uses of generative AI is to generate synthetic content inexpensively. For example, think about photos of models for image recognition. Unless these photos are publicly available, they can rarely be used for commercial purposes due to copyright issues. However, with generative AI, new images can be generated with machine learning for humans that didn’t even exist. Thus, generative AI can generate ...

Noel News – a New Financial Year “It’s okay to celebrate your wins, but remember, wins are milestones, not finish lines.” DAVID MELTZER Welcome to another newsletter and to the start of another financial year. As I write this, the Australian stock-market is at a record highs, and American stock markets are in a similar position. The top 20 performing Australian super funds returned over 18% to their members over the year, a result that nobody would have predicted 12 months ago. I also noticed in my daily diary that exactly two years ago the Australian stock-market was at a six year high.   The question that seems to be in everybody’s minds is “when will the big crash come?”. It’s a reasonable question when you think of the amazing 12 months we have enjoyed with our investments, but you need to keep in mind that nobody has the power to accurately forecast ...

Maha Maluwa (Great Terrace) – steeped in history and legend  By Arundathie Abeysinghe   Maha Maluwa (Great Terrace) is an open park area located in front of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, the most venerated Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka visited by hundreds of pilgrims as well as local and foreign tourists daily.   Maha Maluwa is steeped in history and legend. Initially, Maha Maluwa was the threshing ground of a large paddy field (this paddy field was later converted as the Kandy Lake). According to folklore, when King Wimala Dharmasuriya I (reign 1592 – 1604) consulted astrologers to select a site for his capital, they advised him to select this threshing floor which was frequented by a Kiri Mugatiya (white mongoose – Ichneumia albicauda) as the site was considered a very auspicious place. During the Kandyan Kingdom, many historical and religious events have taken place at Maha Maluwa. According to historical records, King Wimaladharmasuriya I has created ...
